Fishing For Memories:
When I think of the most memorable experiences of my life, fishing trips rank way up there.
Good Friday, 1952. Cold Springs Reservoir, Hermiston, Oregon. Dad getting arrested for
trying to catch a Crappie by adding a jig to a line with three hooks already attached. Federal
Officer enforcing state law, “I'm gonna have to arrest you for fishing illegally.” We proceeded
to the Justice of the Peace's office where Dad proclaimed. “I'm not paying $29.50. I didn't hurt
anybody. Didn't damage any property. The only thing I could have done was catch a little fish
and I didn't even do that. If you think I'm a criminal, throw me in jail. Go get a new rope and
hang me. Just take my boy home. I'm not paying you bastards one damned dime.” After about
an hour of arguing with tempers flaring like gas thrown on a campfire, phone calls to the
County Seat Court House, and the State Capitol, being told that he could not reduce the fine,
the Justice of the Peace looking very tired, asked, “Clarence, would you pay a five dollar fine
and four-fifty court costs?” “Yep”, Dad said, tossing a ten dollar bill on the desk and pocketing
a fifty-cent piece. With the arresting officer loudly protesting, Dad and I walked out the door,
got in the almost new red Dodge pickup, and went home.
Over the next fifty-plus years, I've put a lot of stuff in my fishing memory data bank. Including
trips with friends and family to the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of
Alaska, and many native inland waters. And I'm honored to have fished with one of, if not the
best Charter Captains ever. Capt. Tom Straus of Erie Drifter Charters. For the past three years
I've enjoyed some of the best fishing of my life. King Salmon, Steelhead, Coho Salmon, and
Atlantic Salmon caught in Lake Ontario out of Point Breeze, New York, filled the fish box and
provided tons of great memories for me, my fishing partners, and my two grandkids, Xander
and Buffy. (See Wall of Fame on Erie Drifter web page). And words fail to describe the Jumbo
Perch fishing, and Walleye fishing out of the Wild Wings Marina on Lake Erie. Our Jumbo
Perch trip last November was one of the last Erie Drifter charters of '09, and we couldn't wait to
be Capt. Tom's first charter in April, '10, with several triple “fish on!” cluster flusters.
Can't wait till next time. If you really like to fish and CATCH, give Capt Tom a call, and add a
few bytes to your fishing memories data bank.
